News

Last time that I posted,  I informed you that my laptop had exploded. It is now fixed ( Yay!) , but all of my files are lost ( Not so yay ) . Therefore , all of the posts I had saved up and ready to unleash on you are gone. I was going to re-write them and conduct a blogging extravaganza, but I haven't had time , due to two reasons :

1. I have been appointed Teen Fashion Ambassador for Cheltenham Fashion Week , and am in charge of running the new blog, which can be found by following this link. So far , I have attended a brilliant photo shoot at Cowley Manor , and will be following that up with a Fashion Show there on the 23rd of this month. I have a feeling that Cheltenham Fashion Week is going to be big, so watch this space.
2. I had to make a dress for a Fashion competition last Thursday. It was an inter-schools competition , and everyone from my school made it in to the top ten. We were the only school to do so , and the others looked pretty jealous. My school produced some amazing dresses ( if I do say so myself) , and although mine was a disastrous newspaper concoction constructed merely a week before the event ; it still made it to the top ten , and I was very happy.

So instead of a blogging extravaganza as I so called it , I will just resume posting with the frequency that I was doing so before , effectively just picking up where I left off. Watch out for more exciting things on the horizon. There is a BIG  piece of news coming soon , but you won't be finding out about that for quit a while I'm afraid

However , I will be making a few changes to this blog. The main change is that 'Moosiah's Magical Monday ' , 'Wisdom Wednesday' , and 'Things that Inspire me Thursday' , will be abolished. Currently , I feel that they are just too similar to what I would normally post on a non-segment day , to deserve their own section. If I feel that they are gaining prominence again ,t hen I may bring them back from the dead. But for now , they are gone. Hopefully this will mean that my creativity is not restrained, and I don't have to post about a certain thing on a certain day , because I really do detest such organisation.

I am very sorry to say that my laptop passed away a few weeks ago. As a consequence, I lost all of the posts that I had saved and ready to unleash on you. However, my laptop will soon be restored or replaced, and upon one of those events happening ,  I will have a posting extravaganza , which will hopefully make up for the huge gap that has been left on my blog.

Wisdom Wednesday

Something that I've learnt over the years is the importance of reflection. Every so often , it is very important to take a little time away from all of the chaos of the world , and reflect on your life as it stands. Are you being kind enough? Are you a hard worker? Do you push people too much? These are all questions that you should be asking yourself.
          A useful thing to do is sit down and right out a list of positives and negatives about yourself. Hopefully , the positives outweigh the negatives , but if they don't then this is an important wake up call fro you to improve on who you are. Focus on enhancing the positives , and converting the negatives.

 I will be writing a full and extensive article about this in the near future. Stay tuned to find out more.

How to Throw a Magnificent Masquerade Ball : Chapter 2 ♥

Chapter 2 : Selecting a Venue

Now , this may be one of the hardest parts of planning a masquerade, and to do this part , you must have a secure concept and theme. If you unsure on  what your theme should be  , then read my guide to choosing  one here . Before you start looking for a venue , you may want to decide on a budget. This will make the process a lot easier.

The perfect venue for your event is really dependant on what your theme is. If you are having an enchanted forest themed masquerade ball, then obviously a forest , woods or even your back garden would be the perfect location. However , if you are having a Marie Antoinette themed ball , then it may be a bit harder to find a venue. A good place to look is www.venuefinder.com they have a really useful search engine that lets you search for venues in your local area , that matches your criteria.

      Alternatively , you could ask your local council if they have any village halls, rooms off librarys etc that they hire out. Also , look around at local restaurants and hotels , because many ahve side rooms that they rent out for parties. If you live in a big city then it should be really easy to find a venure. However , in small towns (like mine) it may be more difficult. If you are up for a challenge , and you are having a relatively low key or small ball , then you could try hosting it at your house. However , I onylreccomend this if you are inviting a small number of guests , and are willing to do a lot of tidying up the next day.

Make sure that your location is easy to get to , not down some creepy alley ( your guests won’t want to wonder back in the dark otherwise). Preferably make sure there is ample parking space , or choose a location in walking distance from your guests houses , or bus stops/train stations/underground etc.

Also , make sure that if it’s in a hotel , your guests are considerate towards the people staying there. At the end of the ball you’ll probably want to sit down , not gte in to a massive fight with the hotel manager !

Moosiah's Magical Monday

Once upon a time , a long time ago , in a land far away I discovered a beautiful little website called ' How to be a retronaut'. After falling in Love with the aforementioned website, I immediately signed myself up to the mailing list. Who's seen the latest Mulberry Ads? These are my two favourites :

I Love the bird theme. In case you didn't know , I have an obsession with birds. It's not so much as the actual animal , although I do Love them , it's more the whole theme and symbolism of birds. To me , they represent freedom , and freedom is one of the most important things to me. That's one of the numerous reasons I would never commit a crime , because I would be imprisoned , and that would be my worst night mare.

Speaking of worst nightmares , I've really got back in to the Arctic Monkeys's album 'Favourite Worst Nightmare'. My favourite songs from the album  are :

Another album that I've got back in to is 'Nevermind' by Nirvana. It was the 20th anniversary of 'Nevermind' on Saturday , and I reflected on how much music has changed since then , all because of that one iconic album. You may never have heard a Nirvana song ( Silly you !) , but 'Smells like Teen Spirit' may ring a bell. There is a link to it here. Brilliant song , brilliant band. I was rocking out to 'Lithium' this morning. Go YouTube it !

I did a Tarot reading yesterday and asked which card represented me today. I got the Page of Wands , which I was happy about. Secret Sunday : How exciting !!

My First Secret is going to a big one.A really big one. So big that you probably won't believe me when I say it. Especially if you have endeavoured to read a few of my previous posts.

 Moosiah's Sunday Secret #1 : I used to hate exclamation marks. I refused to use them , stating that they were a repugnant offence to punctuation.I believed that they were cheesy and unnecessary. Oh how I was wrong.

You see? Who would have thought that I would hate exclamation marks . I use one every couple of sentences ! But this goes to show that it is never too late to change your opinions and way of thinking. You always have time to grow as a person , and leave behind silly things such as a hatred for awesome punctuation.

Vogue Summary : Finally !

I'm really sorry to say that my scanner is STILL not working. Damn technology. So unfortunately , this post will not contain any pictures. However , if indeed my scanner endeavours to work in the near future, I will upload the pictures that were intended to be in here. For now , you'll just have to use your imagination. Alternatively , I'm sure some of the Ad's I refer to will be on Google images.

Anyway , here is the long awaited summary ( the quality of writing isn't even worth the wait) :

This years’ September Issue has to be one of my favourites in terms of Ads, since the time I started taking an interest in fashion, and consequently started reading Vogue. The main reason that it was my favourite was because it’s the first time I have ever seen an Alexander McQueen Ad in Vogue. There may well have been one before, but I must have forgotten or missed it because I was terribly surprised to come across one this year. Before surprise, came excitement. After several pages of rather similar ads, this one was different, more dramatic, and more imaginative. So as I turned the page, a smile spread across my face. That smile enlarged when I glanced down to see that it was in fact a McQueen Ad.

       For those of you who don’t know , Alexander McQueen is one of my idols , and one of my three  absolute favourite Fashion Designers, the other two being Coco Chanel  and Guo Pei respectively. I dream about his garments, and his shows. Alexander McQueen’s shows were what really inspired me to chase my dreams of working in Fashion, and they still do, even after his death. I once wrote a small essay on McQueen, for history homework once. We had to choose a person, event or thing from the 20^th century that had changed history, and I chose McQueen. I will post it on here one day.

       Apologies for that small digression, I will return to my point. So , as I was saying , it was really refreshing to see an Alexander McQueen Ad in Vogue , whoever was responsible for that deserves recognition .On the topic of Ads , I would also like to say I am a big fan of the Mulberry Ad that I viewed in September Vogue , like the McQueen , it was a refreshing change .  Chanel did not disappoint, it never does. The Dress in the Bottega Veneta was beautiful. I liked the power, drama and moodiness in the Versace Ad. I Loved the Miu Miu Ad. A staircase littered with shoes? Sounds a bit like my future house! It was Lovely to see a Topshop Ad in Vogue. They’ve been in Vogue for a while now, but it still makes me happy to see that High Fashion and High Street can overlap, and the former is becoming increasingly accessible. The Girl in the Jigsaw Ad made me laugh. If she wasn’t blonde, then she would look exactly like me. Not in terms of her facial features, but more in terms of her facial expression, and of course, what she was wearing.

           The Editors Letter highlighted the fact that the Vogue magazine is no longer the place to turn from breaking fashion news, due to all of the new communication methods and technological advancements such as twitter, facebook, smart phones and even the Vogue website (my homepage). However, Alexandra Shulman did point out that Fashion photography is still one of the best ways of illuminating the trends of the current season. It’s all fine and dandy writing about Fashion, but sometimes you have to see it, and feel it, to really understand it. Too many ‘it’s in that sentence, my apologies.

            Back to Ads. For the first time in quite possibly my whole life, I stuck a ‘Post it’ on a Calvin klien Ad. Please don’t misunderstand me , I have absolutely nothing against Calvin Klein , but I am more inclined to dramatic , extravagant , unique Fashion. Calvin Klein is usually a bit too simple for my liking, but I actually really liked this photo. Sometimes, simplicity is the epitome of elegance. Chloé was beautiful, I Love the soft colours and light fabrics. I also Love the fact that it is seemingly shot in an enchanted forest, and being a Lover of forests and enchantment, it was wonderful. After all, this blog is called ‘The Girl in the Tree’.

      For the same reason that I’m not usually a Calvin Klein fanatic, I’m not particularly inclined to Céline. However, I was once again surprised to find that I really liked this picture from their Ad. I can’t explain why, but I really did enjoy looking at it. Roberto Cavalli really outdid themselves. Beautiful, Bold, Powerful Autumnal colours, with richly patterned clothes. Perfection.

There was a really interesting piece on Brit Marling. I haven’t seen any of her movies, but I am now really interested in doing so, thanks to this article. The culture section of Vogue never fails to provide me with new things to do, watch, see, eat etc. The memoir ‘Wilder Shores’, by Olivia Wilde was also very interesting. Definitely worth a read. It also reminded me of the horror that was the Haiti earthquake. , and how they still desperately need our help.

I was very pleased to read that oversize knits are making their way back in to Fashion. To be honest, I don’t think they ever went out of Fashion. But they are a personal favourite of mine; in fact I am wearing one as a sit and write this. I got it for £20 in a beautiful boutique in my hometown, called Olive. It is quite possibly myself in shop form; I visit it every weekend and am completely head over heels in Love with it. The clothes are extrodinary, and the decor is quite simply amazing. They have vintage Underwood typewriters and vintage singer sewing machines dotted around, along with an assortment of old radios, bicycles and antique furniture. Like I said, it’s me in shop form. More Ads: I Loved the Leon Max Ad; it screamed crazy demented Victorian to me, which is exactly why I liked it. Just my cup of tea.

‘Oh Lola!’ – Oh Marc! He really has outdone himself this time, and it was brilliant choice to use the beautiful and talented Dakota Fanning. I loved the dress she was wearing, and once I get the chance to smell it, I’m sure I will Love the perfume she was holding. The Caroline Charles Ad was classic and brilliant. She has a store in my hometown actually, so I may have to pop in and have a look.BCBG Max Azria. Usually, I detest the colour yellow, but I really loved that Dress. It complimented her hair wonderfully. I apologise for always referring to the models as ‘She’ and ‘Her’, their names are only ever displayed if it is a big name model. The page about Richard Nicoll and Vodafone made me wish I’d never switched to virgin, but oh well.

‘Precious Metal’ was a Lovely editorial, but only two pages long? They were really stunning and well taken photographs, and it was a shame that there wasn’t more of them.

        My favourite section of the issue was ‘Master Class’, photographed by the wonderful Mario Testino. I posted a small extract from the editorial a while ago, and more pictures are available below. As I mentioned earlier, I am a huge fan of Coco Chanel and Alexander McQueen. This editorial, in my opinion, was a combination of the two, which as you can imagine, absolutely delighted me. Normally, I would say that McQueen and Chanel are other ends of the spectrum (I’ve posted a comparison picture of their Ads below), but somehow they joined together. Of course, none of the pieces were from those to fashion houses, with the exception of a few McQueen pieces. The first one, my favourite, was actually a Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton. The silhouette is absolutely beautiful, I’ve dreamt about it several times since seeing it. Marc Jacobs is a brilliant man, who frequently dispels the notion that American Fashion can’t keep up with European. Yes, American Fashion is very different, and ¾ of the Fashion Capitals are European, but Mr Jacobs, along with Tom Ford, show the world just how beautiful, imaginative, and timeless American fashion can be. By the way, who’s excited about Tom Ford showing at London Fashion Week? I am!              

         Anyway, I really didn’t like ‘The Beat Goes ON’. I am a very feminine person, so although I understand and admire the masculine style displayed in that editorial, I wasn’t particularly fond of it. The same goes for ‘Cultured Clash’. I Love clothes clashing, mismatched clothes are something I frequent, however I wasn’t particularly fond of the clothes I saw here. The only expectations were the Loewe printed silk shirt and skirt (£875 and £1,125), on the penultimate page, and   the sportmax embroidered silk-chiffon blouse (£390) and embroidered silk-chiffon skirt (£395). That whole outfit was actually quite agreeable, especially compared to the rest.

        ‘The Turbulent Life of John Galliano’, was an interesting insight in to the life of a very peculiar man. I still not sure what I make of him, but I do know that the article was incredibly well written and Charlotte Sinclair should be commended.

I Love, Love LOVED. ‘Light work’. An avid collector of all things that sparkle, this was my perfect editorial. There were some beautiful pieces, my particular favourites being the Christopher Kane clutch (£550) on the second page , the metallic leather topshop top (£58 – it was very refreshing to see a 2 digit sum in Vogue ), Nicole Farhi sequined skirt ( absolutely gorgeous £1,900), the Nicole Farhi silk dress ( £490 ) with a Marc Jacobs white collar ( £390 – For a collar? Ridiculous!), and finally, the Moschino laminated cashmere sweater dress (£760). All scintillatingly beautiful clothes, as you will see in the pictures. I would like to say that I think Anja Rubik did a brilliant job.

The story ‘Shoot from the Hip’ about David Bailey and Jean shrimpton was very interesting, worth a read. Or two. ‘First Lady of Cool’ an insight in to the life of J crew creative director, Jenna Lyons was very interesting. I really Love her home, it reminds me a bit of the places I see in my dreams, and also of my bedroom. I Love the way she has Shoes in the fireplace of her dressing room.

‘Super Size Me’ – some very interesting photos, when the scanner is working , I will show you my favourite one. Oversized clothes are a must have for chilly British Winters .

  I only had a brief look through the beauty section, I don’t generally wear make-up (except red lipstick), and so never really have an interest in looking at it.  And finally , I haven’t yet trawled through the back pages of Vogue ( Lazy , I know) , but I will do in the near future ,and I will let you know if there are any small brands worth taking a look at.

Wisdom Wednesday : First Installment !

' Some people dance in the rain , and others just get wet'

Today I am going to share with you a very important lesson that I have learnt in my  short time here on earth . That lesson is that you absolutely must see the good in every situation , otherwise you will end up leading a very unhappy life.

I know it's hard to keep a positive attitude  when you sleep through your alarm clock , consequently miss the bus , end up walking and get absolutely soaked by a muddy puddle that is driven through by a rather arrogant man in a shiny BMW. Yes , those things have happened to me ( apart from the bus , I choose to walk anyway).  But despite all of the bad aspects of that situation , there is always a positive. At least one , no matter what. For example , sleeping through my alarm clock meant that I got plenty of sleep and therefore , because I was not feeling tired, I could work even harder and make an extra effort that day. It's hard to see the good , but I can promise you , it is always there. And I never , ever break a promise.

When ever something bad happens to you , write a list of the bad aspects , and then counter them with a positive/positives. Say, for example , that your grandmother had been slowly dying of a painful disease for a while, and had finally passed away. That is a horribly sad situation , and you have every right to grieve . However , your grandmother is no longer in pain , and her suffering is over. That is a positive aspect of the situation.

If you look at the world with these eyes , then hopefully you'll start to see the flowers more than the weeds.

How to Throw a Magnificent Masquerade Ball : Chapter 1 ♥

Throwing a Masquerade ball is a fun and rewarding experience. It is a fantastic way to celebrate an important milestone, or just a great way to have a brilliant time, and release all of your creativity.  The planning is very exciting, but can be very difficult at the same time. Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it. There are plenty of websites that specialise in party planning, but personally, I think it’s more fun to do it yourself. There are also lots of websites that provide materials and services for parties, such as catering. I would list some, but I can’t assume that all readers are from the same country as me, so it would be too complicated. Party Planning is a brilliant way to get your imagination rolling. Go all out; don’t hold back, especially not with a Masquerade.

Throughout the planning process you need to remember the basic rules of a Masquerade ball.

Rule 1: All guests must wear a suitable mask that covers their eyes, and optionally other parts of their face.

Rule 2: No guest is to reveal their identity throughout the ball. If you wish, you can allow your guests to reveal their identity at the end. This can be a really fun experience, and you may end up making lots of new friends.

Rule 3: All guests must come in full costume, and respect the theme (No Astronaut costumes at a Circus themed ball)

Chapter 1: Choosing a Theme

This may or may not be the most crucial part of the planning process. Without a theme, you have nothing to base the other aspects of planning around, and everything will fall apart. You could go the traditional route and throw a Mary Antoinette inspired ball. Or you could do something a bit more modern, like a robot themed ball, where the venue is covered in bits of scrap metal and the costumes are very futuristic.

There are millions of ideas, it just about finding one that suits you. Like I said before, the theme is very important. It helps you decide on what food to buy, how to decorate, what to wear, and who to invite. For example, you can’t have a circus inspired ball if some of your guests have coulrophobia.

The First Step after choosing your theme is to make a mood board. Search the internet for pictures and images to do with your theme, and collage them together, either using a computer program (such as paint or Photoshop), or by printing them and doing it by hand. Add anything that you have at home to do with your theme, to the mood board. For example, in a ‘Lace and Pearls’ themed mood board, you could attach pieces of lace that you have lying around, or you could buy some.

If you can’t decide on one theme, making a mood board for each of your options, and leave them somewhere prominent in your home. Then, after a couple of days (or less, depending on how long you have to plan), see which one speaks to you the most. Alternatively, you could take the practical route of seeing which theme would be cheaper, and which theme would be easier to produce.

It’s really easy to get carried away when planning a ball, so make sure you keep your feet on the ground. I Adore dreaming up ambitious ideas, but make sure your ideas are ambitious and achievable. Also, make sure that you can handle the finances. I strongly recommend setting yourself a budget, and checking whether your theme will fit in to the budget. E.g. If your budget is £$€300, don’t choose the ‘Luxe’ theme, because it won’t be manageable. A good theme for people on a budget is the ‘Recycling’ theme, because everybody has rubbish and old unwanted things in their home.

However, don’t let your money set you back. If you have a small amount of dosh, but a large amount of imagination, then use what you do have. Why not try making most of the decorations? It will probably be a lot cheaper, and you can use things that you already own. Just because you have a small budget, doesn’t mean it has to be boring. You can go to town and back on it, with only a fiver in your pocket. Money (or lack thereof) should never hold you down.

It may be a good idea to make sure people like your theme, otherwise you’ll end up with no guests, and that wouldn’t be ideal. Mention the theme to friends, without giving too much away. You may find that some people want to help you plan and organise your ball, which is great! It would be an excellent bonding experience for those involved, and would take a lot of the pressure off your shoulders. Planning a ball is hard you know J But don’t be afraid to say no; if it’s something you want to do yourself. Assertiveness and independence are important skills in life, but make sure you’re not rude about it, or you may lose some friends along the way. 

Another aspect of your theme is the colour scheme (That kind of rhymes). This may be something you need to think about.

Also, how realistic do you want it to be? If you are having an ‘18^th century France ball ‘, will everybody need to talk in French?

 Finally, make sure you think through all aspects of the theme before making your final decision.

THIRTEENTH BLOG POST ! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Guess what?! This is my 13^th ever blog post. Exciting stuff ! In celebration of this milestone ( In case you were wondering , it’s a milestone because 13 is my lucky number and occasional Lover  [ I was joking about the Lover bit] ) , I am going to introduce another new segment called ‘Things that Inspire me Thursday’. It will start this Thursday , the 22^nd. By the way , a giant rainstorm has just started outside my house. I feel I may have detracted from my point with the last statement , but I Love rainstorms ! And it’s a big one ! I’ve got a whole host of other segments in mind as well , but I will save them for when I actually have a proper reader base.

Specials , Features and Segments : Exciting Stuff !

5 days. Do you know the significance of that? I'll tell you. It has been 5 days since I last posted on here , and for that , I am eternally sorry. But instead of constantly giving you my condolences , I am going to get my butt in to gear and become a better blogger . So with that , we continue .

First of all , I'd like to inform you of some 'segments' that I am going to be introducing to 'The Girl In The Tree'. The first Segment is called ' Moosiah's Magical Monday' , and not surprisingly , it will occur every Monday. This segment will be a mixture of magical and enchanting things that I have come across in my adventures on earth . An eclectic mix , I'm sure , but the more eccentric the better.
       The Second Segment , ' Wisdom Wednesday' is a collection of thoughts ,theories, quotes , mantras and little bits of knowledge. Everything ( Most things , a lot of things , some things) that I learn along life's path , I will share with you. Join me in my quest for knowledge ! .
    
They are the only segments for now , but I may add more at a later date , who knows ?

Another thing that I will be starting is monthly features . My Features include :

A monthly Summary of British Vogue
A monthly How to
A recipe of the month
A quote of the month
A photo of the month.
A monthly review of something.
A monthly photo album

How many times can I use the word monthly in one blog post? ( Don't answer that )

I may add more of these as well.

Also , I will be labelling all of my posts in to groups from now on , so you can easily sort through posts to find things that you actually want to read , because not everyone will like every article I write .

Finally , every so often I will do a huge article extravaganza that takes ages to write and can be on a variety of topics.
